The Cavern Resort & Spa, named after the infamous Cannibal Cavern, is nestled in the foothills of the Northern Drakensberg in the Amphitheatre World Heritage Site area. A place of captivating beauty, it is surrounded by majestic, lush indigenous forests and clear 'berg streams.

Fondly known as ‘The Resort of Many Happy Returns’, The Cavern is a place where families bond, friendships are formed and memories are made. It is a special, tucked-away romantic getaway for couples, a gentle place to find quiet and solitude, as well as a safe and child-friendly resort with a range of fun activities for families.

Enjoy a quiet read in one of our attractive lounges, an elegant tea on the lawn, a drink in the Cave Bar or choose a wine from our cellar to enhance your dining experience.

We have three main types of accommodation:

Standard Rooms

Our Standard accommodation is set in lush garden landscapes with a vibrant mix of indigenous planting, filled with the sounds of birdlife. Each room has bathroom en suite, tea and coffee making facilities and a patio to soak up the sun and enjoy the mountain splendour. There are no TV’s in the standard accommodation.

Superior Rooms

Our finely appointed Superior accommodation is set overlooking the magnificent indigenous Fern Forest with private patios to enjoy the views, listen to the sounds of forest streams and relax in our mountain wilderness. Our superior rooms are spacious and have a TV and bar fridge.

Superior Suites

With superior finishings and fittings our superior suites are nests of tranquillity, each with its own private fireplace, patio, TV and bar fridge. The superior suites are set overlooking the magnificent indigenous Fern Forest with private patios to soak up the sun, listen to the sounds of forest streams and relax in our mountain wilderness.

The Forest Retreat

Unwind in magnificent surroundings. Enjoy our relaxing treatments by qualified body care therapists. We observe the strictest sterilisation and hygiene procedures and conform to a strong code of ethical conduct.

Our luxurious “Forest Retreat” nestles happily on the edge of the Cavern’s beautiful Fern Forest, an ecosystem steeped in history. About 200 000 years ago, during a warm wet period, Afro-montane forest stretched all the way from the equatorial East African highlands to the Cape, covering most of the eastern half of the country.

So while your body enjoys the physical pleasures of care and cosseting, let your spirit fly free in our fabulous forest.
