Manyoni Private Game Reserve – Northern KwaZulu-Natal
Big 5 Safari Game Park | Zululand, South AfricaJust 30 km north of Hluhluwe in north-western Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal, the Manyoni Private Game Reserve (formerly the Zululand Rhino Reserve) is one of South Africa’s most important conservation success stories.
Formed in 2004 when 17 farms dropped their fences to create a contiguous wilderness, the reserve spans 23,000 hectares. In October 2005, 21 black rhino were successfully released here – a milestone project that has since seen the reserve become a thriving home for the Big Five, with lion reintroduced soon after.
Today, Manyoni is a premier Big 5 safari destination, combining luxury safari lodges with world-class conservation.
Game viewing in Manyoni Private Game Reserve is excellent, with a rich diversity of species:
Big Five: Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Black & White Rhino
Predators: Cheetah, Caracal, Serval, Hyena, Genet
Plains game & mammals: Hippo, Giraffe (numerous), Warthog, Baboon, Vervet Monkey
Antelope species: Kudu, Nyala, Impala, Waterbuck, Common Reedbuck, Mountain Reedbuck, Duiker, Red Bush Duiker, and the rare Suni
Smaller wildlife: Mongoose, Bush-babies, and the endangered Leopard Tortoise
Birdlife: Exceptional variety, making Manyoni a true haven for birdwatchers
Manyoni offers a mosaic of habitats, from riparian forests and open grasslands to thorny bushveld and rocky hillsides. These diverse ecosystems create the perfect environment for leopard and other elusive species.
Guests staying at lodges within the reserve can enjoy:
Twice-daily guided game drives (morning & afternoon/evening)
Guided bush walks for up-close encounters with nature
Birdwatching safaris in a “birder-friendly” reserve
Wildlife hides overlooking waterholes for quiet observation
🌿 Manyoni Private Game Reserve is more than a safari destination — it’s a living conservation project, a sanctuary for endangered species, and one of KwaZulu-Natal’s finest Big 5 wildlife experiences.
